Yaoi-con 2007
This y-con I got to hang with crazyloststar, cryogenia, edchii, wiccat, and mikke!
Hard to say what went on this y-con–I have such a hard time keeping up with a timeline XD But I arrived around 5pm at LAX–that’s L-A-X, not lax–and miracle of miracles, crazyloststar found me at the airport after I got my luggage! Then we hung out at her parents’ for a bit, got food, and took off around 10pm for the drive up to San Mateo with her awesome sister, Itch.
We made it into San Mateo around 4:30 despite our exit being completely closed, and because crazyloststar had requested early check-in, we were able to get into the room. The prospect of having a bed at that point almost obscured the fact that they got some kind of half-suite room of awesome. But I would be headed to a full suite the next night, so I had it good all around.
About five hours later we got up for breakfast at IHOP where wiccy recounted her trouble about people getting the wrong idea about her, resulting in her repeating to us that she is not obsessed with buttsex, to which someone at another table responded (in their own conversation) “Oh, really.” The timing was good enough that I almost lost my coffee.
Back at the hotel, it was time for cosplay and badge pick-up. This year I failed in the costume department and ended up wearing almost exactly what I wore last y-con. This year included a wig, which I ended up rather liking, even though it gave me a massive headache as wigs always do. Badge pick-up was confusing this year. I suppose it was designed for high-volume processing, but there weren’t that many people about when we picked up our stuff, so having to pick up a post-it note at one table, go to another room, match our post-it notes to the current board, and find the tables with the actual badges . . . seemed very silly. But somehow they never got wiccat’s reg, so it was even worse for her. :(
We hit the dealer’s room(s), but not quite early enough, since by the time we got to the doujin it was almost devoid of anything but Roy/Havoc, which isn’t bad, but I’m not familiar with the circles. However, I did find a Mulberry Cats on Maes 2, which was a great find, especially with the delicious color pages. I’ll scan the doujin covers soon.
I think the rest of this post is going to be very asyncronous because I couldn’t keep track of time while I was there, let alone now, a week after the fact ;)
crazyloststar takes awesome Ed photos, even when she doesn’t mean to. Snuck some of edchii too. :D
Soon it was hat time. The first one was mikke’s adorable hat. The second one, of course, was mine. And what could follow but fuzzy ears from mikke’s trip to the dealer’s room? Somewhere there is a photo of me in these ears.
What was seriously awesome was that by this day (Saturday), Itch decided to cosplay in crazyloststar’s anime!Ed gear, which made us all v happy, especially me, since I now had a total of three (3) Fullmetals. And of course I took advantage of them that.
Later that night, I had my heart set on getting cosplay photos of movie!Ed in that awesome pose from the movie, so cryogenia accompanied us to get some photos. We also got some cool ones of Itch and crazyloststar being emo across the barriers of time. And since crazyloststar had her arm knife with her, we sort of enacted the final scene in the Flame vs Fullmetal battle. We took pictures of this about 90 times, each one wrong for some reason. I think the rest of them are on mikke’s camera.
After this, or maybe before it, we had gone out onto the balcony area. Crazyloststar sat up on the rail, and cryogenia entered onto the scene with “That looks like some danger!” Aw chickens <3
At some point in the weekend we ate a lot. We went to BJ’s. We shopped at Target for a black glove that we could only find in Power Ranger flavor. We ate at some other places. I realized I hadn’t spent all my money yet and on Sunday bought more doujin, a Fruba t-shirt of emo Kyo (“When is the year of the cat?”) to match crazyloststar’s Yuki shirt, and a hyuroi print from Ponderosa. Oh, and crazyloststar and I both won T-shirts and free passes to that anime convention in Sacramento which I can’t go to. We also caught closing ceremonies as our only participation in con events, though we meant to see at least three other things, and just didn’t get around to it. And awesomely, edchii and wiccat’s table made a lot more money than it did at AWA. Excellent indeed.
Eventually on Sunday it was time to de-costume and leave. crazyloststar, Itchy, and I set out around 9:30pm after dinner, and we got to LA around 6am because we had to stop for a nap. The rest stop location at first looked okay, but after the nap, we tried to use the restrooms, but they were locked, and we had to go into the 7-11-type store to find bathrooms. A stray dog waltzed into the store ahead of us, and the door to the bathroom was propped open. It was very shady. We were glad to go. When we got into LA, Itch unfortunately had to finish her homework and go to class, but crazyloststar and I slept until about noon. And here was where the Monday of epic fail began.
- I wanted some sushi, so crazyloststar suggested this sushi/shabu-shabu place at a mall near her apartment. We were also going to visit her apartment so I could see it and meet her pups! But about halfway there, she realized she forgot her house keys when she put her car keys back in her parents’ house (we had a rental car). But we were hoping the management could let us in anyway.
- Management was mysteriously gone, probably for lunch, but there was no note about when they’d be back. So we decided to just go to lunch, but not before accidentally alerting her beagle that we were on the outside of her door.
- We parked at one corner of the mall area and found that, oddly enough, the place we had intended to eat at was actually the complete opposite corner of the mall. Not a long walk, though.
- Of course, when we got to that corner, we saw that the place was closed for four days of cleaning/renovating starting that day.
- We ate somewhere else and returned to her parents’ house, which again, we didn’t have keys to, and crazyloststar had to jump her back fence to get in through the back door
- After contacting lacidiana, whom I’d been planning to meet for the first time that day (since she lives in LA and how often am I in LA?), it turned out that we couldn’t meet up after all because of some paternal birthday trouble
- crazyloststar and I went out to another restaurant that night hoping to get the sushi we’d been after. She asked the waitress if they had soy bean paper to wrap the sushi with instead of the seaweed (which makes her ill), and she said yes, so we went ahead and ordered one of the sushi platters. It came with seaweed anyway, and by that time, we couldn’t ask them to remake it, and crazyloststar had to unwrap everything before she could eat it D: (the waitress thought we were just asking about the paper, not requesting it). Crazyloststar commented that this was just one more indication that I shouldn’t leave! But then I thought about this trend of bad luck continuing onto my plane, and that was a little unsettling.
- crazyloststar dropped me off at the airport at 8:45pm for my 10pm flight, which would normally have been an abundance of time. However, on that particular night, the line for the security checkpoint was phenomenal, and many people had missed their flights because they were stuck in it. It was horrendous, and the agent for my airline never came around to collect anyone. By the time I was taking my stuff off the ramp, they were announcing the last call for my flight, and as I was running frantically for my gate, they were calling my name. I only just made it before they closed the cabin door.
But at least I eventually got home, after a 4-hour layover in the FREEZING DETROIT TERMINAL. FREEZING.
The end :D
