Hughes had been married long enough not to think twice about responding to a look like that with a kiss, though in hindsight, he would later admit, he should have realized he’d been with Roy at the time.
It would be several days before he would question why Roy had been looking at him like that in the first place, and furthermore, why Roy Mustang, soldier, leader, and reluctant destroyer of the East, had fought the error so weakly.
A handful of re-enactments later and Hughes was no closer to the answer, but he decided there were some mysteries he didn’t need to solve.
